Tauranga Fire Brigade senior station officer Mark Keller says when firefighters arrived smoke was pouring from the roof and the kitchen was in flames.

Seven firefighters wearing breathing apparatus managed to extinguish the fire, which has gutted the kitchen, he says.

Mark believes a single elderly woman lives at the house. She was not home at the time.

"We are waiting for her to return."

A reporter at the scene says firefighters are busy trying to find the cause of the fire.
