Candidate stays cool-headed

UnitedFuture's Bay of Plenty candidate Ben Rickard is issuing a chilly challenge to his party counterparts – leader Peter Dunne and Tauranga candidate James Maxwell.

Ben fulfilled his nomination for the social-media crazed Ice Bucket Challenge this morning, pouring a bucket of ice cold water over himself in an effort to raise money for charity.

"It was cold, very cold, but a worthy cause. If only we could have the same success raising funds for our election campaign."

Those nominated for the challenge have 24 hours to drench themselves, or forfeit the challenge by making a donation to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis – ALS Association.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has taken the world by storm in recent months, raising over $100 million for research into Lou Gehrig's disease.

It is one of the most successful viral social media campaigns in history and has seen the likes of All Blacks, ex-US Presidents, pop stars and thousands around the world take part.
