Knifepoint robbery accused in custody

UPDATED 10.26AM: The Tauranga man accused of robbing Mag's, Cards and Lotto on Cameron Road and The Aussie Butcher in Gate Pa will remain behind bars until next month.

Tyson Tama Taki, 24, appeared briefly in Tauranga District Court today charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of wilful damage.

A man has been arrested over the knifepoint robbery of Mags Cards and Lotto on Cameron Road, and the Aussie Butcher.

The wilful damage charge relates to him allegedly damaging police cells after he was arrested.

No plea was entered and he was remanded in custody by consent until September 10.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner says the 24-year-old man was arrested overnight as a result of information from the public.

'We are still keen to hear from any members of the public who witnessed either robbery.

'Any information will help with our investigation.”

The alleged offender is accused of robbing the Lotto store near 17th Ave at about 9.45am on Friday.

Police earlier said a man wearing a dark hoodie with the hood pulled over his head walked into the stationery shop armed with a knife and demanded cash from the owner.

The owner complied with the requests and the man has then left the shop and was last seen running towards the Tauranga Hospital carpark. Read here for more about the robbery.

Greg says the man is also charged in relation to the armed robbery of The Aussie Butcherat Gate Pa shopping centre on August 17.

An employee was working at the butcher about 7am on the Sunday morning when a man entered the shop through an open back door.

He grabbed a 20cm butcher's knife and threatened to stab the employee if he didn't hand over cash and open the safe. Read more about the robbery here.
