Siblings admit kidnapping

A Rotorua gang member who tied a pillowcase over a Tauranga woman's head before threatening to cut out her tongue and eyes over a money dispute has been jailed for three years.

Siblings Simon Tehuirua Rameka, 43, and Brenda-Lee Rameka, 35 appeared in Rotorua High Court on Monday on kidnapping and violence charges from the February 23, 2013 incident.

The pair originally denied the charges but after a sentence indication by Justice John Fogerty each entered guilty pleas.

Simon Rameka was sentenced to three years' imprisonment on charges of injuring with intent to injure, wounding with intent to injure and threatening to cause grievous bodily harm by shooting.

Brenda-Lee Rameka will be sentenced on October 29 after admitting to kidnapping, injuring with intent to injure and threatening to do grievous bodily harm.

The judge suppressed the victim's name and any identifying details.

According to the summary of facts Brenda-Lee took the Tauranga woman to Rotorua on February 23 last year where they met up with her brother.

When she told her brother the woman had stolen money from him he became angry, grabbing a pillowcase tying it tightly over the woman's head.

The woman was forced to sit on the kitchen floor for 16 hours where Simon elbowed her in the nose. Every time she went to speak she was punched and kicked by both Ramekas.

Brenda-Lee kicked her in the mouth and hit her with a blunt instrument and as she felt something in the back of the head heard the words "Should I shoot you?".

Simon pressed shearing scissors or secateurs into her hands, drawing blood.

She was kicked, punched, hit, cut and threatened that her tongue and eyes would be cut out.

The woman lapsed in and out of consciousness, managing to escape and run to Rotorua Hospital when the Ramekas fell asleep.

Both Ramekas have affiliations to Black Power, while the victim's family is connected to the Mongrel Mob.

3 years? that's it? When is NZ going to start getting tougher on these criminals. Total waste of a police force when you finally manage to get these losers into a court only to hand out the most lenient sentences.
