Speed a factor in Welcome Bay crash

A driver is likely to face charges after a two car collision saw one vehicle crash through a wooden fence and into Waipuna Park.

Three people were taken to Tauranga Hospital after emergency services were called to crash on Kaitemako Road, outside Waipuna Park, yesterday afternoon.

Acting Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Sergeant Mike Owen believes the driver of a black Mitsubishi lost control while travelling down Kaitemako Rd at speed.

The vehicle slid into the other lane, hitting a silver Toyota travelling in the opposite direction, he says.

'The vehicle [Mitsubishi] has continued to bounce and slide down the road ending up in a ditch.

'The other vehicle has lost control crashing through railings into Waipuna Park.”

The Mitsubishi suffered considerable damage to the front bonnet, while the Toyota could be seen with damage to the driver side door and its airbags deployed.

The Mitsubishi ended up in the ditch about 50 metres from the collision site.

Three people were taken to Tauranga Hospital for observation including the driver of the Mitsubishi, says Mike.

He couldn't confirm how many people were in each vehicle at the time.

'There will be charges pending. Reading this [the job sheet] I would say dangerous driving.”

Yip it had to happen. There is a group over that side of the park who are a law unto themselves. Burnouts and hooning up the road. I feel sorry for the other car owner-imagine the inconvenience and fright.

Good to hear no one badly hurt

"Overit" comments spot on. Seeing more speeding drivers on this road, burnouts etc especially in the weekends. No room for error , especially up further where the road narrows. Overit too.
