TCC adopt city growth predictions

Tauranga City Council adopted growth figures this week, predicting the city's population will grow by nearly 40 per cent during the next 19 years.

For planning purposes, and as a guide for the ongoing Ten Year Plan process, the population of Tauranga City is projected to grow from 117,280 in 2013 to about 161,565 in 2033.

The city's also predicted to grow to about 195,852 in 2063 – another 21.2 per cent increase.

The figures have been common knowledge among TCC and staff since May, when the topic was discussed in a series of SmarthGrowth workshops.

The median population projections for the Western Bay of Plenty sub-region are:

• Western Bay of Plenty District's population will grow to 60,608 people in 2063.

• Tauranga City's population will grow to 195,852 in 2063.

• The Western Bay sub-region's population will grow to 256,460 in 2063.

TCC outlines agreed growth projections are fundamental to development of the draft LTP because they form the basis for planning council services and the timing of infrastructure projects.

The predictions underpin the calculation of development contributions and are the common set of projections that support a consistent growth scenario across the organisation.

The revised population and household projections were commissioned specifically by SmartGrowth and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council to update previous projections for the territorial authorities in the BOP Region.

The revised projections were adopted by the SmartGrowth Committee on May 28, 2014.

How on earth can you adopt growth predictions? I mean the predictions will either be accurate or they won't, and the only way to check it to wait and see. A good indication would be to report on whether the predictions made by Smartgrowth years ago have proved accurate today. I have my doubts.

beyond that mate, all these "magic mushroom" numbers come from Smart Growth who themselves admitted that all there numbers were garbage. For that reason alone TCC will adopt them because that means the gravy train keeps coming.
