Chemical burglary CCTV images released

Police investigating the burglary at a chemical plant in Mount Maunganui where about 60 litres of a dangerous P chemical were taken hope releasing CCTV footage will help identify those involved.

The CCTV images show two people at the plant on Thursday about 11.15pm when a large quantity of hypophosphorous acid was stolen.

The CCTV images show two people at the facility where the burglary took place on Thursday night.

The acid is a key chemical used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

This week's robbery is the second time the Totara Street facility has been targeted, with 1000 litres of the same substance stolen in January, 2009.

Detective Constable Matt Valentine says police do not want to reveal the exact location of the theft to hopefully prevent yet another theft.

He says Thursday's offenders spilt some of the acid when they were disturbed by staff at the facility, and may have suffered burns as a result.

'We are appealing for information from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the burglary or who may have seen anything suspicious between the hours of 10pm and 12am in the Harbour Bridge/Totara Street area.

'We are also keen to hear from people who know or have suspicions about people who have recently come in contact with such chemicals.”

The exact amount of chemical that was stolen is not known but Matt says somewhere between 50 to 60 litres was missing from the tank.

A scene examination has been completed and police will now work through the information they have, he says.

People with information relevant to the investigation are asked to contact Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.
