White Ferns play Bay's rising stars

It is hoped the unusual sight of cricket being played at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval this month will produce benefits on the other side of the world in a few weeks' time.

The White Ferns will play a warm-up match on Saturday against some of Bay cricket's rising stars.

A return visit to the West Indies after last year's successful tour takes centre stage on the White Ferns agenda in September.

The New Zealand women's cricket side will play four ODI and three T20 matches, starting with the first one day international on September 13.

While Saturday's Mount match is a vital part of the White Ferns' Caribbean tour preparations – the Bay of Plenty Invitation team, providing the opposition at the Bay Oval encounter, will be looking to show early season form to impress the Bay of Plenty selection panels.

The Bay Invitation side consists of a number of the most promising senior secondary players from last year, with a couple of players who earned their Bay senior means team debuts last season.

Bay of Plenty Development coach Charles Williams will mentor the team on the field, while Ben Musgrave and Cameron Neal can call upon their Bay first team experiences from last season.

Shannon McSkimming from Taupo is an extremely promising spin bowler, while the youngsters of the team in Sean Dykes and Josh Earle are still Year 10 students.

The 50 over match starts at 11am at Bay Oval.
