Fine days ahead for peninsula

After receiving more than 100mm of rain this week, the Coromandel Peninsula can now look forward to a dry spell, which the Metservice forecasts will extend well into next week.

MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey says the low pressure system that brought rain to the North Island during the last couple of days is moving away to the east today, leaving a cool southerly flow in its wake.

About 10 days of fine weather are forecast for the Coromandel Peninsula.

During Tuesday and Wednesday, the upper North Island was the wettest place in New Zealand with parts of Northland and Coromandel receiving more than 100mm of rain, but now they're in for an extended dry spell lasting well into next week

'This should mean a fine weekend for many places, although the east and south of both islands can still expect cloud and a few showers,” says Stephen.

'Although there will be some beautiful clear winter days, these conditions will produce cold overnight temperatures and frosts in many places,” says Stephen.

The forecast for Whitianga is fine with southerly breezes right to Monday with daytime temperatures hovering between 13-16 degrees Celsius.

Whitianga's overnight temperature is one degree Celisius tonight but rises to three degrees overnight on Friday and Saturday and gets up to four degrees on Sunday and Monday nights.

From next Tuesday, wind lightens in Whitianga and fine weather continues to Saturday, August 30, with daily temperatures between 13-15 degrees Celsius and most nights seeing overnight temperatures reach four degrees.
