Crashes cleared at Bayfair roundabout

UPDATE: 11.45AM: Bayfair roundabout is now clear after two crashes caused traffic delays earlier this morning.

Traffic was briefly blocked at the intersection of Maunganui and Girven roads when a car and truck crashed moments before a van and Bay Hopper bus collided about 9.45am.

The van involved in the second crash is believed to have collided with the back of a bus.

The two vehicles involved in the first incident were moved to the side of the road quickly, but the van from the second collision remained at the centre of the roundabout for some time.

Tauranga Police Senior Sergeant Eddie Lyttle says the road is now clear.

Earlier:

Tauranga Police constable Pete Simmons says initial indications are that a white Toyota vehicle coming up to the roundabout has manoeuvred itself in front of truck that was travelling towards Mount Maunganui from the Te Maunga roundabout.

'The white car, driven by an elderly lady, was coming up Maunganui Road and was in the left hand lane and has moved into the right hand lane to turn right down to Bayfair."

He says the truck driver hasn't seen her and both vehicles have collided and stopped in the middle of the roundabout.

'There are no injuries. There was also a nose to tail as a result of a build-up of traffic. It was a minor crash and no injuries.”

Pete says the Bayfair roundabout has a high volume of traffic going through it and police do attend the occasional crashes at the roundabout.

'Take care at roundabouts, look and stick to your lane.”

Dharmesh Kanji was a passenger on the bus when the second accident occurred.

He says traffic was backed up as a result of the first accident, prompting the second.

'As we were coming around the corner a van rear ended us from behind.”

Dharmesh says the van was travelling slowly but at enough speed to give everyone on the bus a shock.

Another elderly driver strikes again. There was one yesterday at the roundabout by Pak n Save Papamoa. In the wrong lane and nearly wiped a car out. They should have to take a driving test every year to be able to keep their licence.

I've noticed...

These large trucks come up to the bayfair roundabout too quickly and they prefer to shoot through rather than giving way sometimes. Not saying this is anything to do with this accident but just something I noticed a number of times at that roundabout.

Nothing wrong

what do you expect with such a dangerous round about. You have to go like the clappers to pull out of any of the roads. It is always a hassle driving through there at certain times. Something needs to be done today not tomorrow, before more accidents happen

Agree nothing wrong with roundabout....

Its the way people approach them and negotiate them know where you are going before getting in the car and don't change lanes unless you absolutely need to

Well

when the lights come instead of minor crashes there will be the odd death here n there, again nothing wrong with the road its the drivers and NZers of all ages are pretty bad

Too small.

This roundabout is obviously too small to handle the volume of traffic coming through two lanes from 4 directions. Sure, there is an amount of driver error but essentially it should be the size of the one at the end of Tara and Parton Road in Papamoa East where the amount of time to get on and around it allows for a more feasible amount of driver error.
