Road open after gas leak

UPDATE 11.48AM: Contour Ave in Pyes Pa is now open after being cordoned off this morning as firefighters worked to get a gas main rupture under control.

Three fire crews attended the call, along with the specialised Hazmat unit, after a contractor using a small digger on a new home build hit a gas main about 8.45am.

Firefighters at the Contour Ave home under construction this morning.

The new home's owner Janine Evans says the fencing contractor hit a gas main on the boundary of the property.

'We were unaware from Council plans that a gas main runs under our house, so we have called the developer of the division and he is going to ring us back to let us know where the gas mains run, because we're not going to have gas in our house.

'A contractor had hand-dug a fairway down to check and there was nothing there. At some stage the main might have run off the boundary.”

Janine has been renting in the area while the house is being built and had returned from the school run to find the fire trucks in the street this morning.

'We are due to move in in three weeks. I haven't been able to speak to anyone, the firemen have just told me that I'm not allowed in, so I have just rung the developer.”

Nearby resident Kevin Banfield, who lives 200 metres from the break, says firefighters told him to shut all his windows and doors until the gas has been cleared.

'We were also told not to use any electrical or gas devices. You could smell the gas before, very clearly.

'It's just a bit of excitement for the street. We are such a small area that this is big news.”

Vector, a gas company, was called to the scene and the rupture was repaired.
