One lane open on direct road

UPDATED 11.52AM: The Tauranga Direct Road, between Tauranga and Rotorua, is now open to one lane at Awahou after being closed earlier this morning.

The stretch of highway was closed to light traffic due to flooding.

State Highway 36 was closed earlier this year due to a slip.

Traffic was being diverted down State Highway 36 around the lake at Hamurana to enter Rotorua via SH30 past the airport.

NZTA says roading contractors have been monitoring the water levels in the area and will continue to do so throughout the day as more rain is expected.

"SH29, between Tauranga to Te Poi, over the Kaimai Range, is also experiencing some surfaces flooding but the road is open in both directions."
