Heavy rain on way for peninsula

Heavy rain is expected for the Coromandel Peninsula and Western Bay of Plenty regions with about 70mm to 90mm forecast to fall overnight.

According to Thames-Coromandel District Council, peak intensities could reach 10mm-20mm per hour in possible thunderstorms early tomorrow morning.

Coromandel Peninsula is forecasted to receive 70mm to 90mm of rain overnight.

MetService has issued a Severe Weather Watch from Northland down to Bay of Plenty, where short-duration rainfall may reach warning amounts of 70mm in 12 hours from late today to early tomorrow.

As result, council advises the region's residents need to make sure anything affected by possible flooding is out of harm's way before this evening just in case.

'Make sure your mobile devices are fully-charged in case of localised power outages.

'Watch out for streams, because these can rise suddenly. If your life or property is endangered at any point overnight, call 111 immediately.”

For issues relating to sewage, drinking water and roading, call TCDC's Customer Services team on 07 868 0200. Teams will be on shifts to handle any calls throughout the night.

'Please feel free to tell us how things are where you live and see how everyone else is getting on around the Coromandel by checking in with us on Facebook.

'When we have weather issues, it's a good time to ask ourselves: What would I do if:

I had no power for 72 hours (three days)?

I had no water pump for 72 hours?

I had no oven or microwave for 72 hours?

I was stuck at home and couldn't get to the supermarket for three days?
