Pupils voice road safety

Mount Maunganui Primary School pupils are pushing for road safety by taking to the airwaves with children's voiced radio advertisements.

Mount Maunganui Primary School pupils Jack Kelly, 11, Taylor Newton-Pratt, 10, and Joshua Benge, 10, before recording their advert today.

Schoolmates 11-year-old Jack Kelly, Joshua Benge and Taylor Newton-Pratt, aged 10, got a chance at radio fame today when they recorded their advertisement highlighting the importance of shared pedestrian and cycle paths at the Radio Network.

The campaign is the prize of Tauranga City Council's Travel Safe team's recent competition ‘Share with Care' – which Mount Primary won.

And 30-seconds was enough to inspire 11-year-old Jack to want to become a radio announcer when he's older.

'I felt super pumped,” says Jack.

'It wasn't nervous once I got in there [recording studio] and started recording all the nerves went out the door.”

The boys' main message 'if you use shared pathways, make sure you look out and respect other pedestrians” will air on ZM, The Hits and Flava in September and October.

'Road safety is important because if we didn't have road safety there would be chaos on the streets and it wouldn't be safe for pedestrians to walk on the footpaths,” says Jack.

Principal Damien Harris says pupils patrol the pedestrian crossing outside the school before and after the bell and the Travel Smart team monitor and encourage road safety during the week.

Damien says the boys' radio message will help spread the memo across the community.

'They've done a fantastic job and it's a great service they're providing for the community.

'It's been in our school newsletter ‘The Pipeline'. Everyone was really excited to hear it and once it hits the radio it will be even better.”
