Waihi tot’s family give thanks

The Waihi family mourning the death of their three-year-old son, who drowned in Ohinemuri River last Tuesday, wish to thank everyone who has supported them through the tragedy.

Julia and Jason Tapp lost their son Ezra after he escaped his child playpen and wandered off through the gate of the family's Silverton Rd home on August 12.

Waihi toddler Ezra Tapp was farewelled this afternoon.

Jason soon found Ezra in the Ohinemuri River, 200m from his home, and despite resuscitation attempts, he died at the scene.

This afternoon family and friends farewelled Ezra with a service to celebrate his life at St John Anglican Church at Waihi, followed by private cremation.

Through a statement to police, the Tapp family wish to thank everyone 'who has continued to support us as we grieve for our beautiful Ezra”.

'This is the worst possible tragedy for us but we are thankful for the many kind words and the help we have received from the community as we struggle to come to terms with losing our much loved ‘Ezee-bear'.”

A funeral notice describes Ezra as the 'most lovable, bright, bubbly, cheeky, charismatic and energetic son of Julia and Jason. Much loved brother of Zoe and Liam. Dearly loved grandson of Margaret and Ben Tapp and Colin and Liz Quayle”.

The notice also thanks Waihi Police, St John Ambulance, and the local Waihi community.

Since Ezra's death the Tapps have learned his heart is suitable for a valve donation that will help save up to three other children's lives.

'His heart valves will go on to save other children,” Julia told SunLive.

Julia says Ezra never stopped running from the minute he woke up to the minute he went to sleep.

He was a climber and escaping was part of his favourite, she says.

The Waihi community have set up a Givealittle fundraising page to help the Tapps and tributes have been flowing via social media sites.
