Dog attack victim in hospital

A 20-year-old woman is in Tauranga Hospital with minor injuries to her hand after she was bitten while trying to break up a fight between two dogs outside her Tauranga City apartment.

The woman was returning to Monmouth Apartments when police say a brown American Pitbull that followed her from Matapihi onto her property began attacking her dog just before 10.30am.

Police attend to the dog that allegedly bit a woman's hand in Tauranga City today.

As the woman intervened police say the unknown dog bit her on the left hand.

A police officer outside the Cliff Road station heard the disturbance next door and came over to investigate. Watch the interview with police here.

Mount Maunganui St John Ambulance were called and transported the woman to hospital.

District Operations Manager Jeremy Gooders says although the woman's injuries were minor, she was taken to Tauranga Hospital for further treatment to lacerations on her hand.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board communications manager Diana Marriott says the woman is currently in a stable condition in a ward at Tauranga Hospital.

Tauranga City Council animal services team leader Brent Lincoln says the pitbull is being held at the pound while investigations are undertaken.

Brent confirmed the American pitbull is registered and micro-chipped and belongs to a Tauranga owner.

'What we'll do is we'll interview the victim and find out exactly what's happened from their side of it,” says Brent.

'Then we'll interview the dog owner and see what's happened from their aspect of it.

'We'll have a look and see if there's any history associated with that dog or the owner and then we will make a decision.”

Depending on the investigation the dog owner could face a warning, fine or prosecution.

'It's an ongoing investigation and it's not until we've gathered all of the facts that we'll have a decision.”

I was the women who called the police and the ambulance I felt so sorry for this young girl my neighbour, I wish this dog can be put down and the owner can be charged for not taking care of his pet.

NO ARGUMENTS If the dog, registered or not, was on the loose and attacked another dog or person, it gets impounded and put down. And the owner should be required to cover ALL costs, police, council staff, medical treatment etc, etc.

Sad Day

I hate reading stories like this, because of a bad dog owner for not keeping control of their dog, it will now most likely be put down. Poor dog.

But the dog was registered and microchipped......surely this automatically means that it won't roam, attack or poo everywhere??? Isn't that why we all give the Council loads of money? Or at least that's what they want us to believe!
