Creative cooking skills tested

Bacon, kiwifruit, apples and steak are all being used by Tauranga Boys' College hospitality students at the Tauranga Farmers Market today.

Students are taking a product from each stall to highlight the variety of products available at the market.

Nico Kaehne, 17, says they are basically showcasing all the different produce the stalls have to offer.

'We are cooking different combinations and making various products for people to try. So far we have made about 15 to 20 different dishes from custard squares to steak, mushroom, pesto and cheese sandwiches.

'We have taken products that may have been overlooked while people have been shopping and favourite products from the market to make the dishes. Whatever we think could work well together we have tried and if it works we will let other people try it.”

Nico says the little steak sandwiches made from Turkish bread, steak, pesto, cheddar cheese and portobello or oyster mushrooms, seem to be the most popular.

Of the dishes the five students have made, three have been unusual but popular with the market crowd.

'We did bacon and kiwifruit this morning for breakfast where we took a quart of kiwifruit, wrapped in a rasher of bacon and fried it up. It went quite quickly,” says Nico.

'Another combination we did was slices of pepperoni with honey and slices of blue cheese. The third dish is a bit of steak with caramelised apple and the apple is caramelised with honey.”

The winners of the 2014 FMNZ Awards were also announced at the market this morning.

Market manager Trixie Allen says Kandu Organics won the main award for organically from the paddock nationally and Mount Eliza Cheese got creamiest producer from the dairy.
