UPDATE 1.15PM: Police say driver inexperience may be a factor in a man flipping his 4X4 and a trailer-load of timber into a ditch on State Highway 29.

Emergency services were called to SH29 between the Welcome Bay traffic lights and Poike Road roundabout about midday after reports of a vehicle down a bank.

Tauranga Police Senior Constable Chris Hill says the man driving the 4X4 vehicle towing the load of wood on a single axle trailer simply lost control.

The driver was travelling north on SH29 before crossing the road and ending up in a ditch on the other side of the road.

'It's like the tail wagging the dog," says Chris. "The load was too big for towing behind the vehicle. The car just spun out across the road and tipped."

Normally people brake when a trailer starts to go, but the correct response says Chris is to accelerate. In this case the vehicle did not have the power to pull the trailer load of four metre 6x2 timber straight.

The driver was not injured.

If people were taught how to load trailers and the importance of keeping the weight forward of trailers centre.... a trailer with the weight behind the centre can physically jump from side to side, even a car trailer with a car on it... pretty scary. Glad the driver is ok
