Flood victims promised answers

Roxanne Place residents, tenants and business owners affected by June's flooding are invited to a private meeting with city and regional council staff next week to discuss the Waimapu floods.

On June 12 the Waimapu Stream flooded Roxanne Place, Windermere and Glen Lyon Avenue off Maleme Street on the west side of the stream.

Gary Jefferson's business immediately after the flooding in June.

Storage King operations manager Lorraine Jones in Roxanne place and Gary Jefferson at Design Furniture and Lifestyle imports both suffered major losses with stock ruined by flood waters.

Gary's has since moved out of Glen Lyon Place and is in the process of re-opening his business in the former Design Mobel building on Maleme Street.

Storage King will remain at the premises, says regional director Mark Bateman.

'Where we are based, we cannot move,” says Mark.

'We're property-based retail reliant on council to clear its excess areas to allow water to flow freely out.”

After the 2011 flood the property owner built a higher wall at the back against the next ‘100 year flood', but this time it came roaring at them up the road, says Mark.

'We are in council's hands. We are happy to turn up to any meetings, stand up, talk to council.”

About 200 Storage King customers had property in store affected by the June flood waters.

'The majority have stayed with us they understand it's not of our doing. The owners of the property are not backward in investing to ensure we alleviate it as much as we can.

'We are taking a pragmatic approach.”

Gary is moving to higher ground at the other end of Maleme Street.

'We haven't traded really since the flood,” says Gary. Re-opening is about two weeks away.

Another Roxanne Place business spoken to in June - Lollipops Playland - remains closed.

Next Thursday's meeting is in two parts, says city council drainage services manager Graeme Dohnt.

There's a private meeting with the Roxanne Place owners and tenants from 2.30-3.30pm before the Waimapu flood data is available from public scrutiny from 3.30-6pm.

The Waimapu catchment flood modelling information is currently being peer reviewed by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.
