Tauranga residents are suffering from the winter blues with only 42 per cent of the city registering as happy, according to online data.

NZ MoodMap reports an average happiness rating of 42 per cent from June to July, putting Tauranga in the lowest third of the country.

Free popcorn and candyfloss is handed out to youngsters on Marine Parade.

Soverign health insurer yesterday visited Marine Parade in Mount Maunganui to hand out candy and popcorn in an effort to sweeten the mood.

'Along with eating well, sleeping and exercising, happiness is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle,” says Sovereign Chief Marketing and Innovation Officer Chris Lamers.

'After achieving a happiness high of 83 per cent on June 24, our MoodMap tracked a downturn in Tauranga as the colder weather really kicked in.”

Tauranga is not the only place showing a downturn during the winter months. The NZ MoodMap revealed a record low of 14 per cent in Nelson during the June-July period. Dunedin and Whanganui were also in the lower end of the spectrum with averages of 31 per cent each.

Conversely, the happiest places in the country for the same period were Kapiti Coast, with a delirious 87 per cent average happiness, and Waipa District with 75 per cent.

Launched in June 2014, NZ MoodMap is an interactive tool designed by Sovereign to capture the mood of New Zealand as it happens.

Kiwis can rate their happiness anonymously here and compare regional averages and share how they are currently feeling.

'The NZ MoodMap is designed to create some awareness about what is affecting our moods and get people talking about it.”

'Studies show that happier people live longer and experience better health than their unhappy peers. This is an important issue for everyone.”

Part of the 'blues' cause could be related to the exorbitant premiums charged by health insurers!

...that we tend to get thoroughly spoiled living here with the views, beaches, climate, wall-to-wall sunshine and so on. Try living in Palmerston North, South Island west coast, Invercargill and parts of Auckland. Even Wellingtonians love the good days they get. It's so easy for us to forget how moderate our climate actually is after we have had one frost! Learn to appreciate the gifts we have here and get out and enjoy them!
