Horan claims defaced sign

Tauranga Independent MP Brendan Horan is claiming council sprayers as the culprits of a vandalism attack on one of his election hoardings found plastered with a spray sign.

The New Zealand Independent Coalition Party leader, who has been vocal in his anti-spraying stance, found a council contracted spray warning sign stapled onto one of his hoardings at Moa Park this week.

A spray warning sign was found on one of Brendan Horan's election hoardings at Moa Park.

The campaigner against the city council's dune spraying programme is taking it personally.

'I've been very vocal and did an article about the ludicrous spraying these people have been doing, how they have killed the dunes, contributed to erosion, and killed native flora and fauna in their zealous and inane quest trying to remove exotics from the sand dunes,” says Brendan.

'It's amazing what happens when you put your head above the parapet and draw attention to something,” says Brendan.

'It's disgraceful, one of the guys lives on the beach and it's like a desert where they have sprayed.

Brendan objects to the use of council approved sprays used to remove weeds from Mount Maunganui's sand dunes.

He says the 'agri-chemicals” used are contributing to human allergies, as well as impacting the natural eco-systems of the dunes.

'Where there used to be geckoes and starlings and all sorts of things, it's just a little desert. In that last full moon they lost about five metres of sand dune because there was nothing to hold the dunes in.

'You say something about our council, and then they come back like that. It's just bizarre.”

'These are council workers. Other people are having their signs vandalised by well, vandals.”

But Tauranga City Council told SunLive it was not undertaken by any council staff or contractors.

Tauranga City Council communications manager Frank Begley says contractors did spray in Moa Park and they put up signs as per usual, and none were attached to the political sign.

'I suspect it is a piece of vandalism,” says Frank.

The signs stay up for 48 hours after spraying is finished.
