Kaimai fatal crash: SH29 re-opens

LATEST: State Highway 29 over the Kaimai Range has re-opened after a fatal crash.

Police say clearing the scene took longer than expected, due to the position of the vehicles. Two cars were involved. The deceased was a 16 year old girl, the front seat passenger in the car travelling toward the summit from the Waikato. The driver of that vehicle and the sole occupant of the other car were reported to be not seriously injured.

Inspector Ian Brooker says immediate next of kin have been advised. No further information will be available until the wider family have been notified.

Earlier report: One person has been confirmed dead in a vehicle crash on State Highway 29, just past the Kaimai Summit.

Acting Senior Sergeant Tristan Murray told SunLive that one person is dead and the highway is closed.


Two cars have crash on the Matamata side of the Kaimai Range.

He says there is no other infomation available at the moment and diversions will be in place but asks motorists to avoid using the highway until further notice.

4:19pm:

Emergency services are responding to a two car crash on SH29, at the Kaimai Summit.

Acting Senior Sergeant Triston Murray says a police unit from Matamata is heading to the scene, along with a unit from Tauranga.

Firefighters from Greerton have also been called to the accident.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesperson says one person is trapped and firefighters are getting to work to extracation equipment to remove the patient.

Why are there so many crashes and deaths on the kaimai's. I have travelled that road many many times with no incident in wet, dry and windy conditions, can somebody help me understand why
