Behind the scenes of the ‘Z Nail Gang'

Whakatane and Tauranga residents have the opportunity this weekend to go behind the scenes of the Bay's newest home-made film when it screens at cinemas in the towns.

Released in the Bay of Plenty after its world premiere in Te Puke on Thursday night, ‘The Z Nail Gang' showings today and tomorrow come with a ‘question and answer' session.

Whakatane and Tauranga residents can meet ‘The Z Nail Gang' director Anton Steel and producer Kylie DellaBarca Steel at cinemas this weekend. Watch the trailer below.

Director Anton Steel, producer Kylie DellaBarca Steel and actors Tanya Horo and Coben Storer-Goto will be on-hand at the sessions to answer questions about the film.

Today, Whakatane resident can watch the movie at Whakamax at 4pm and be part of a Q&A at 5.30pm.

Tomorrow, Tauranga residents can watch the film at Rialto at 6pm and join the same type of session at 7.30pm.

Pukehina husband-and-wife team Anton and Kylie say the film is a feel-good action-comedy based around anti-mining protests in the Coromandel in the 1980s.

Kylie says people can watch the film at cinemas in the BOP now and it will screen in the Coromandel from August 14 and be nationally released on August 28.

'The Q&A's will be a 20-30 minute opportunity after the film to talk to Anton, myself and Tanya – our lead lady in the film, and Coben, who plays ‘Tipene'.”

'Whakatane's Richie Tidd, who was also in the film, will be at his town's Q&A,” says Kylie.

'It's a great opportunity to ask us how the film was made, about the content, and how we pulled it off for only $30,000 and with help from a big swag of volunteers.

'So it's good chance to get an individual story on the whole thing.”

Independently produced – with truckloads of community support – the film features leading Kiwi actors, including Erroll Shand playing ‘Dave', Vanessa Rare as ‘Aunty', Geoffrey Dolan as ‘Sgt Smith', Tanya Horo playing ‘Mareeka', Jim McLarty as ‘Ted Bates' and Paul Ballard as ‘Ned'.

Shot in locations around the Bay of Plenty in February-March, hundreds of Te Puke, Pukehina and Pongakawa people, businesses and community groups came together to volunteer time, money and effort to make the movie – and more than 300 saw it first at the world premiere.
