Lamp posts down in crash

Three lamp posts are strewn over the Waihi Road-Cambridge Road roundabout after a woman crashed her starlet this morning.

The female driver, in her 60s, was driving her Toyota on Otumoetai Road when she collided with the roundabout, coming to a stop on Cambridge Road about 11.20am.

She is currently being taken to Tauranga Hospital for observation.

A reporter at the scene says three lamp posts – one on Cambridge Rd and the other two in the middle of the roundabout – are downed, along with a pedestrian barrier on Otumoetai Rd.

'Somehow she has gone around the roundabout and taken out three lamp posts and came to stop about 10-20m down Cambridge Rd.”

Cambridge Road resident Rex Davies heard a crash and come out to see the pole going over.

'The driver mounted the curb and missing a wooden light pole and a tree on the other side of the road. It would have been a wreck if she had hit the wooden pole.

'We [Rex and another Cambridge Road resident] went to check on her, but she told us to carry on with what we were doing.”

Rex says the driver had one arm but this wasn't confirmed by police.

The driver was assessed by ambulance staff while the car was towed away - reopening both lanes of traffic to motorists.

Tauranga Police Acting Traffic Sargent Jennie Wright says the woman wasn't seriously injured but has been taken to Tauranga Hospital for a check-up.

Another elderly driver causing havoc. Good job it was just lamp posts and not people she hit. I bet she will still carry on driving.

How about we wait to hear/read how this actually happened, before we surmise the driver in her 60's is 'elderly”. One day you might be referred to as elderly, and maybe you will be somewhere in the region of 80 plus to own that title. The 60's is certainly not elderly these days.

Since when has 60 been "old"???? Our youth kill themselves on a daily basis!!

If 60 is so old

they'd better bring the pension back down to it so those "old" taxpayers working full or part time no longer have PAYE off their earnings going to the govt to prop up other things like WFF etc that those younger people enjoy ;-)

She may have been a bad driver all her life therefore her age may not be relevant. After all, NZ is choc full of terrible drivers.

Just another day in the life of an average Kiwi driver whatever her age! We have in this country some of the worst drivers in the world and no NZ girl, they are not all old. Some of the very worst driving I have ever seen has been from young drivers and I call them drivers in the loosest possible terms.

What was she driving??

NZgirl, you are getting older every day, watch what you ask for, probably by the time you get your wish, you will be one of the first to get your license stripped, because others deem 'you are too old'.... Drivers just need to learn to drive, learn the rules and obey them... til they do, this poop will continue to happen, no matter how old the driver is.... although the young think they are indestructible, they too, often prove this is not always the case....
