Review of Radiocommunications Act 1989

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has today published a discussion document reviewing New Zealand's Radiocommunications Act 1989. The discussion document looks at issues including competition regulation, technical parameters on licences and interference management.

The Radiocommunications Act was last comprehensively reviewed in the mid-1990s. The scale of technology change since then means it is timely to review the Act now.

‘The review is broad-ranging. We are seeking views from industry on any aspect of the Act and how it currently operates,' says Len Starling, Manager of Radio Spectrum Policy and Planning at MBIE.

‘We encourage industry to participate actively in the review process to ensure the radiocommunications regulatory regime is robust for the next 20 years.'

Workshops will be held in mid-September in Wellington, Auckland and, if there is sufficient demand, Christchurch.

The discussion document has been published on MBIE's radio spectrum website at http://www.rsm.govt.nz/cms/policy-and-planning/consultation/review-of-the-radiocommunications-act-1989

Submissions are due by 1 October 2014.
