One hospitalised after Oropi crash

UPDATED 10.05AM: One person is in Tauranga Hospital following a two car crash on Oropi Road earlier today.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 7am to find a silver station wagon and a 4WD vehicle had collided head-on on Oropi road, just south of Warner Road.

Two cars are seriously damaged following a crash on Oropi Road.

Acting road policing manager Sergeant Mike Owens says the crash is believed to have been caused by one of the vehicles crossing the centre line slightly on the corner.

'There's no indication of speed at this stage, in relation to exceeding the speed limit.”

Drivers from both vehicles received minor to moderate injuries in the crash, but only one was taken to hospital.

Tauranga St John paramedics report a man was taken to hospital with minor to moderate injuries, the other driver is believed to have been treated at the scene.

Mike says airbags on both vehicles deployed.

A reporter at the scene says the recently installed armco barrier prevented one of the vehicles from being knocked over the bank.

'It think it's a good testament to the safety of both those vehicles, had they been ‘64 Escorts there might have been fatalities," says Mike.

speed has nothing to do with it if you cross the centerline does not matter how fast anyone goes if someone is coming the other way they still gonna hit each other, answer here is driver error

I worked up Oropi Rd for 3 yrs. The speed people drive on the straights beyond the Garage are incredible.

Error?!

I beg to differ Kavey. It is pure arrogance to cut the corner in the belief that nobody will be coming the other way. How dare people take such risks and have no regard for others? Pure arrogance with a big dollop stupidity.

Had they been '64 Escorts....

They would have probably been driven with pride and in a careful manner...? Agree with both comments so far..the "back road" is pretty scary sometimes, particularly when you see someone texting in the rear vision mirror!..crossing the centreline, how much road do you want?..poor driving standards and more worryingly lack of caring for other road users..

Shouldn't happen

You are wrong. This section of road is in such a poor state and has been for years. Some serious roading work is required by council to fix this corner once and for all. Locals have been telling the council to fix it, for as long as I have lived here, 11 years.

Stuw..is this an excuse?

The "poor" condition of the road does not excuse poor or inattentive driving. What you have in front of you is precisely what it is!..good or bad..a responsible driver should be able to comfortably deal with this, and make submissions to the authorities involved to fix it, please be responsible for your actions is surely the message to all of us, motorists or not!

Lousy road, or driving?

What happened to the old adage, ‘drive according to road conditions'? Works for a lot of drivers, fortunately, or I guess our hospitals would be chokka, and panelbeaters would be in perpetual heaven. Maybe we need mirrors on all corners so we can negotiate them on the wrong side if we want to.

Cars do not kill people....

Roads do not kill people... people kill people! Learn to drive, learn the rules, pay attention and drive to the conditions... it is pretty simple really. People need to grow a brain! Nothing wrong with escorts.... I quite like them imo...

Bushy?

Which vehicle was in the wrong? How do you think it is easy to see which one? Which vehicle was travelling in which direction? You should join the cops if you can prove guilt by looking at one picture? Would save us tax payers a lot of money, instead of having to have crash investigators go to accident scenes if you can do it from home looking at a pic on a computer?
