A Tauriko resident got more than he expected with the morning newspaper delivery today when the delivery driver's brake failed sending the vehicle careering into the side of a home.

Jim McClennan was fast asleep at the other end of his Rexford Heights' home when the peoplemover came careering down the hill into the side of his garage about 4.30am.

Jim McClennan inspects the damage to his brick double garage after a car smashed through the wall today.

He awoke about 6am to hear car doors closing and police knocking on his door.

'I asked them ‘what have I done?'” says Jim.

'They were waiting for the towie.”

Someone who was up at 4.30am was MORE FM Tauranga DJ Brendon Weatherly, who witnessed the crash as he drove to work to host the breakfast show.

'I was driving down my street and saw this guy in a high visibility vest running down the street waving his arms.

'I thought he was a bit of a nutter - I thought ‘What's this guy doing? Going for a run at 4.30?'

'Then I realised he wasn't intending to go for a run. I noticed this vehicle was further down the road and I twigged to what had happened.”

Brendon says the driver had gotten out of his vehicle and the car had started rolling down the road.

'There's a decent slope on it and it has gone across the road and slammed into a house, about half way down.”

A couple of young roadside kauri trees were knocked over, and might have slowed the careering vehicle, but it still smashed brickwork when it hit the side of the double garage.

'I was standing with the guy for a wee while helping him out,” says Brendon.

'He was an older guy, so I jumped down to get his cellphone out of the car - the house is down a level from the road. I was half expecting the owner of the house to come out.”

After checking out the damage to the side of his garage and retaining wall, Jim is this morning contacting his insurers.

He is expecting plywood will be covering the hole tonight.
