Pukehina scrub fire out

Updated: Fire fighters have successfully put out a scrub fire in Pukehina after battling for more than three hours to extinguish it.

Pukehina and Maketu fire brigades were called to the 300m by 100m blaze at Pukehina Parade, near Gardiner Place, about 3pm.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Michael Uptown says the blaze is now out and fire fighters left the scene about 6.10pm.

"The guys have said the fire is now fully extinguished and they have just dowsed down a couple of hot spots that were there, and they've left it as it is.

"It's all under control."

Earlier: A third crew of fire fighters has been called in to help battle a large scrub fire in Pukehina this evening.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Paul Radden now says a third appliance from Te Puke has been called to help, and hose reels, high pressure deliveries and breathing apparatus are being used to combat the blaze.

He says a support officer was bringing back-up breathing apparatuses because the brigades were running out.

'There's no structural buildings threatened, but we do still have three crews out there working.”

He is unsure what type of bush land is burning.

Sharon Whitaker, an employee at the nearby Hippy Pippi Tavern, can see the scrub burning behind the tavern at 500 Pukehina Parade.

She says firefighters seem to be getting it under control.

'It started off as a little fire I think and then it must have got out of hand.”
