Ciggie butt sparks dune fire

A scrub fire that interrupted Papamoa Volunteer Fire Brigade's annual honours night at the weekend is believed to have been sparked by a discarded cigarette butt.

The crew were hosting the annual honours event at the station on Parton Road when they received a call out to a scrub fire about 9.30pm Saturday.

Papamoa Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy chief fire officer Brent Sanford says the blaze burned through about 5m by 5m of scrub, between Grant Place and Alexander Place.

'It was [caused by] a discarded cigarette butt I think.”

Brent says it took firefighters about 15-20 minutes to dampen down the blaze.

He says smokers need to ensure their cigarette is out before discarding it.

'Don't just throw them down; make sure they're stubbed out. It's still reasonably dry out there.”

Papamoa firefighters were later called to a gas leak outside Rain Bar on Gravatt Road about 12.30pm.

'We had to wait for the gas warden to turn up to close it off. They just had to turn up and turn the gas off.”
