National titles won in Taekwondo champs

Day two of the ITF Taekwon-Do championships is kicking into action at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre today following a number of world championship medalists taking home national titles from day one.

The second and final day of the competition in Tauranga features a number of the top dan belts in sparring, including Kane Baigent from PNTA club in Palmerston North, who will compete in the senior middle first to sixth-dan sparring category.

After day one, which featured close to 350 competitors from around the country, Central Districts are the top region with 28 gold medals. Counties Manukau are second on 22 gold medals, followed by Midlands and Auckland both on 13 gold medals.

The best overall club is PNTA from Palmerston North ahead of Southern Cross TK Academy, also from Palmerston North, and the Paul M Club from Papakura.

Manurewa 21-year-old Melissa Timperley, who won gold and silver at last year's world championships in Spain, was successful at winning the very competitive and quality field in the female senior second dan.

Timperley also won the patterns title over Helen Caley from Christchurch with Kara Timmer, from Midlands, and Auckland's Sonya Robinson third equal.

The female senior dan specialty, high kicks, was won by Palmerston North's Estee Speirs – a bronze medalist at the world championships – finishing ahead of Timmer in second with Caley and Timperley third equal.

The male senior third dan patterns title was taken out by Dane Canton from Central Districts – a former world championship silver medalist. Canton finished ahead of Tomonori Shibata of the South Island with Auckland's Mathew Daveny and Michael Onland from Central Districts.
