Chase-accused to defend charge

A Tauranga man facing multiple charges following a police chase in Welcome Bay last month is planning on defending the charges later this year.

William Jonathan Wiki, 31, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday facing 12 charges including two counts of failing to stop when followed by red and blue lights, driving in a dangerous manner, possessing methamphetamine, and assault on a person with a blunt instrument.

William Wiki was remanded in custody during his last appearance in court.

He is also charged with possession of utensils, unlawfully carrying a firearm, and driving while disqualified.

Wiki has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

He was arrested following an incident in Welcome Bay on June 1, when a white Subaru was seen acting suspiciously in the area.

A short police chase ensued when police attempted to stop the vehicle.

At the time of the incident, Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said the vehicle had to be spiked twice before police could apprehend the suspects.

Police deployed spikes across Welcome Bay Rd, at the intersection of Waitao Rd, in an attempt to stop the vehicle.

The offending vehicle collided twice with a police vehicle, causing moderate damage to the police vehicle.

In court, lawyer Nick Dutch, who was acting on behalf of lawyer Tony Balme, told Judge Peter Rollo that Wiki will defend the charges at a half-day defended hearing on October 14.

Wiki is also facing three new charges, which include two counts of burglary and one count of receiving a stolen car.

'The defence hasn't received the disclosure on the three new charges; two counts of burglary and one receiving charge,” Nick explained to Judge Rollo.

Wiki will reappear in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday, July 29, where he's expected to make a bail application on the three new charges.
