TECT election winners announced

A detective sergeant, a lawyer and the sole candidate seeking re-election have topped the 2014 TECT election, as the Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust board's three final trustees.

Peter Blackwell and Paul Tustin will join Ron Scott, who is re-elected to his seat, and returning trustees Bill Holland, Bruce Cronin and Ken Collings to make up an all-male board.

The results were announced after a three-week voting period ending at 12pm today.

Peter, Paul and Ron received the most votes of the 19 candidates, which began their campaign June 25.

The TECT Trust is administered by six trustees, with three trustees retiring by rotation every two years – giving each trustee a four year term.

Peter and Paul replace retiring trustees Michael Cooney, Dame Susan Devoy, who didn't seek re-election.

Speaking to SunLive this afternoon, Peter, who topped the poll with 5553 votes says it's fantastic news.

'I feel magnificent, I'm very, very happy that I've been given so much support from the community and given this opportunity to represent them.

'I'm excited to work with key people in our community to represent and to invest their money wisely in relation to many very worthy community groups. So I'm stoked.”

Ron, who came in second with 4704 votes, is feeling very relieved.

'It's really only this morning I started thinking ‘What if?'

He says his key goal is to complete the process with the city's tertiary education.

'That's really something I've been keen on doing for the last five years, so that's number one.”

He believes the board, while all male, is made up of very different individual who each offer something unique.

'If you look at each of the six, all of us have a history of working with people who aren't us. Pete has worked with Tauranga Riding for the Disabled…Bruce has worked with all the people at BayTrust.”

'Mark Twain says if there is two people in the room and they both have the same opinion then one of them isn't required.”

Paul Tustin could not be contacted for comment due to a court hearing this afternoon. He received 3943 votes.

Well done to all candidates for these roles. I am pleased, and I hope all our community is too, that such a large pool of dedicated people were prepared to put themselves into this contest with intent of serving others...... Particularly, CONGRATULATIONS to Pete, Ron and Paul. Thank you!...... Bill Gibson-Patmore

Thanks to all the people who took the time to place their vote. Less than a third of those eligible did so. I am sure trustees will be aware of views not automatically reflected on the board. One way for those views to be heard is to take the opportunity to come to the AGM on the 31st. We also seek views every year in a formal process asking for feedback on our annual plan. Just recently we had a separate consultation purely on the tertiary funding idea. Not everyone has the ability to commit several days a month to a trust like TECT but everyone is welcome to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard via tect.org.nz ) and make their views and thoughts known to the Trust. We welcome it. Thanks again for placing your trust in those you have elected. Regards Ron Scott
