Ice on roads prompts warning

Cold icy conditions are causing hazardous driving conditions on roads around the Bay of Plenty.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says winter is here and early morning ice on roads can be dangerous.

It was a chilly start in Tauranga with ice on highways around the region.

'I have had the highways checked out and there is a small bit of ice on State Highway 29, near McLaren Falls. Drivers need to take care there.

'I haven't heard back about SH36/Pyes Pa Road but my recommendation would be that people take extreme care, especially up on the plateau.”

Ian says the stretch of SH36 between TECT Park and Te Matai Road is a high risk area.

While there have been no reported crashes related to ice on the roads, Ian says police are investigating an early morning crash where a car took out a steel fence on Brookfield Road about 4am.

'Police attended a car versus fence at the intersection of Brookfield Road and Otumoetai Road and there were no injuries.

'It looks like a single vehicle collision and no alcohol was involved.”

Ian says police are still investigating the cause.
