UPDATE 12PM: The toast is laid out as Bay of Plenty Polytechnic prepares to write itself into the world record books today.

The polytechnic's Windermere campus will host its first ever world record attempt – to have the biggest number of people simultaneously dipping toasted bread ‘soldiers' into eggs at a single venue today.

Toasted soldiers are laid on tables ahead of the world record attempt at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

The current record stands at 178 - held by soldiers of the Allied Rapid Response Corps at Imjin Barracks, Gloucestershire, on January 22 this year.

BOP Polytechnic student experience coordinator Kirsten Crossan says the vibe around campus is exciting as they busily prepare for the world record attempt of 220 people – coinciding with re-orientation week.

'It sounds like everyone is pretty excited, but there is obviously a lot to do,” says Kirsten.

'We are pretty confident we will get the numbers.”

In the meantime 220 eggs need to be boiled to perfection for a runny yolk and 17 loaves of bread toasted, giving each participant two soldiers to dip into their egg.

The eggs have been donated by Henergy Cage-Free Limited and the bread by Coupland's Bakeries.

Participants will then be divided into tables of 10 – 20 tables in total – under the watchful eye of eight to 10 witnesses to ensure the world record is approved.

The world record attempt is at midday at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic's Windermere campus, A Block.

SunLive will have full coverage post event.
