Two people arrested in Maungatapu yesterday following a police chase of an allegedly stolen vehicle are to appear in Tauranga District Court today.

The man and woman were arrested after they attempted to evade police by hiding the blue Subaru legacy stationwagon they were driving, behind the shopping centre on Maungatapu Road.

The man was located by a police dog team near a property on the harbour's edge.

The woman was arrested near the vehicle while the man managed to escape across the road and was later located by a police dog team.

The man is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, failing to stop, and driving while disqualified.

The woman is charged with breach of bail, theft, shoplifting, and unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.

Both are due in court today where police will be opposing bail.
