Classroom arrives at new home

A 116-year-old classroom from Otumoetai Primary School has arrived at its new temporary home at Historic Village.

Tauranga City Council property manager Anthony Averill says the historic classroom was removed from the school overnight and transported along Cameron Road to 17th Avenue, where it's currently sitting on the back of a truck.

'It is in one piece. It is now at the Historic Village and will be placed in a temporary place during today.”

The decision to remove the classroom built in the 1890s from school grounds was made by the Ministry of Education in June to allow room for the building of two new classrooms.

The removal is estimated to cost $30,000, with a further $60,000-$70,000 to maintain the building once it's relocated to Historic Village, says Anthony.

He says the classroom will be kept at the village until TCC receives sufficient funding to properly locate and upgrade the building.

Meetings to discuss fundraising options to cover the cost of maintaining the building will be held this week.

If people would like to donate money to the classroom they can contact Anthony Averill at TCC on 07 5777 000.

$30,000 to shift the building? Somebody is getting tucked. As for it's resitting and made functional, it was operating as a day-care until removed so there can't be too much wrong that requires $60-$70,000. Much of the work could be undertaken by The Men's Shed and contributing businesses if Council had a mind to accept offers of support other than just cash.

Yup

While the price does seem excessive, at least its going somewhere that it will be appreciated and maintained. But wasn't it getting both where it already was?????
