The seven-year-old boy left in a critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in Welcome Bay is being described as a 'miracle child” due to his rapid recovery, which has seen him return home to Tauranga.

Rawiri Wilson Te-Whata had been playing a spotlight hide and seek game when he was hit by a car as he crossed Meander Drive about 6pm Monday, July 7.

Rawiri Wilson Te-Whata has been discharged from Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital and is back at home in Welcome Bay.

He suffered critical head injuries and was taken to Tauranga Hospital before later being transferred to Starship Children's in Auckland.

SunLive reported last Wednesday the Selwyn Ridge Primary pupil had woken from an induced coma.

Today an Auckland District Health Board spokesperson told SunLive Rawiri has been discharged from hospital.

A comment from his aunt Janie Te Whata on the Selwyn Ridge Primary School Facebook page describes Rawiri as a 'miracle child”- now home from hospital.

She thanks everyone for the donations of food and money for Rawiri's three brothers and two cousins.

Rawiri lives in Meander Drive with his mother Corine and three brothers - one-year-old Iziah, Te Kahurangi, 6, and Cassidy, 9, along with aunty Monique and two cousins Trey and Cyprus.

His nana Miria and poppa Neil, who live in the house behind them, helped Monique look after the children while Corine stayed at the hospital with her son.

'He is such a miracle child this boy and I know it has to do with all the prayers that you all sent our way, we all send our love to all his friends and people that knew him that sent him wonderful cards while he was in hospital, it really made his day,” says Janie's post.

'So from the bottom of our hearts thank you and we love you all. We never would of been able to be as strong as we are without your love and support. Love from Rawiri family.”

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager, Senior Sergeant Ian Campion, says police are still investigating the incident but alcohol was not a factor.
