Grindrod sweeps the field

A faultless on court display has given squash player Ben Grindrod the perfect welcome home present comprehensively dominating a star-studded field in the Tauranga Squash Open.

After breezing through the opening rounds, including a win against Commonwealth Games athlete and New Zealand No. 1 Joelle King, Grindrod continued his strong form in the open championship match with a clean-sweep win over Matiu Te Kani-McQueen 3-0.

Tauranga Squash president Char Niles says the 20-year-old's recent exposure in Europe has paid dividends, allowing him to not drop a set all weekend.

'Ben is our local favourite and local player, so the focus for him was coming home and playing in front of his home crowd after being on the international circuit recently,” says Niles.

'So for him to take out the title in front of his home crowd he was pretty stoked about that.”

She says Grindrod produced an 'unbelievable” run to go through the tournament unbeaten, let alone without dropping a set against a quality field.

'Pittams [second seed Michael Pittams] and Te Kani-McQueen they are quality players; they are no slouches.”

After falling to Grindrod in the opening day King encountered a tough match with Pittams before winning 3/2 to win third place.

Abbie Palmer also won easily 3-0 in her Women's Division 1 championship final.

Niles believes this is the biggest tournament to date with a full house on both days – especially finals on Sunday – with King already announcing she will return for the 2015 edition.

And the success of the tournament bodes well with the club hosting both the 2015 North Island Championships and New Zealand Maori tournament.

Held at the Devoy Squash and Fitness Centre, the annual tournament attracted 180 entries of different skill levels including players from the United States.
