An unlicensed motorcyclist with a now broken leg is likely to face charges after crashing into a metal barrier at Apata.
Police and St John Ambulance paramedics were called to the crash on Wainui South Road, about 10.55am Sunday.
A motorcyclist broke his leg after crashing into a metal barrier on Wainui South Road.
Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the 19-year-old rider lost coming around a bend and crashed into a metal barrier.
It is too early to know if alcohol or speed was a factor but charges are likely, says Ian.
The 19-year-old man was taken to Tauranga Hospital with a serious leg injury, understood to be a broken leg, says St John Ambulance district operations manager Jeremy Gooders.
Bay of Plenty District Health Board communications manager Diana Marriott says the Turua man is in a stable condition in the orthopaedic ward.
During the weekend police attended five crashes on Western Bay roads – all on Sunday.
Ian says it's surprising all of the crashes occurred in Sunday's fine weather condition, as opposed to Saturday's wet weather.
He says motorists deserve a pat on the back for their caution during Saturday's atrocious conditions but is disappointed by the handful of minor or non-injury crashes.
'On the Saturday throughout the foul weather we didn't have a single crash that police attended and yet yesterday when there was fine weather and we had a bit of a reprieve from the onslaught, we had five,” says Ian.
'Obviously people were taking extreme care in the wet weather and that's great. But when the weather lifts we get a total of five, which is just the flip side of the coin and is really disappointing.”
