Fine weather forecast for Bay

Bay of Plenty's thunderstorm watch has been lifted with 36ml recorded in Tauranga City and emergency services reporting an uneventful night.

The MetService issued a severe weather warning yesterday morning before adding the thunderstorm watch in place for the region as a front moved slowly eastward across the Bay overnight.

Fine spells are forecast for the Bay of Plenty in the comng days.

Thunderstorms were expected about central and eastern parts of Bay of Plenty/Rotorua from about 6pm, producing localised downpours of 25 to 35mm/hr.

Metservice meteorologist Leigh Matheson confirms the thunderstorm watch was lifted about 2am with little rainfall recorded since and forecasts of long sunny spells heading into the next 48 hours.

'That front that bought an awful lot of rain in Northland and Auckland passed through Bay of Plenty overnight,” says Leigh.

'It looks like the biggest numbers were up in the hills with 70ml. Rotorua recorded 30ml and Tauranga 36ml.”

Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Greerton fire Brigades all report a 'quiet night” with no weather related callouts.

Leigh says about 20ml of rain is forecast for the Eastern Ranges today – the last of the wet weather for the region.

Monday's forecast is for showers before dawn before a fine day and a high of 16 degrees. Tuesday is mainly fine with light winds and 15 degrees.

'Essentially Western Bay of Plenty is going to be pretty fine. There may be the odd shower today but nothing much to speak of. It should all be gone by early morning,” says Leigh.
