Man admits driving crimes

A 50-year-old man who went on an alcohol-fuelled rampage in Whakamarama has pleaded guilty to a raft of charges.

Nai Lance Moanaroa admitted to sustained loss of traction, dangerous driving, wilful damage, assault and a third or subsequent driving with excess alcohol charge in Tauranga District Court on Monday.

According to court documents on June 8 Moanaroa performed skids in a maroon Nissan Navara on Ross Rd and later in a local resident's driveway where he had an altercation with the property owner.

This is before following him down to Whakamarama Rd, where he trashed and rammed the vehicle.

Moanaroa drove down the private driveway, rammed the property owner's vehicle twice, u-turned and exited his vehicle, which ran over a traffic sign on an intersection centre median.

He attacked the owner's vehicle with a stick, and punched the driver's window yelling at the owner to get out.

Moanaroa shattered the window, and then kicked in the door panel when he realised there was no one in the car.

He walked over to where the couple were parked, took his shirt off and began performing a haka, before sitting in the road and waiting for the police.

When police arrived to arrest Moanaroa he was sitting shirtless in the middle of the road with his hands clasped on his head.

Later testing revealed his blood alcohol level was 198mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

Police say Moanaroa had been drinking before he started at 12.30pm reversing and skidding up Ross Rd and ended up in an altercation on Whakamarama Rd.

Judge Christopher Harding granted Moanaroa bail and ordered him not to drive.

He also ordered a home detention report and a probation report for when Moanaroa re-appears in court on August 15 for sentencing.
