Urgent appeal to house children

Four children and a baby living in Homes of Hope accommodation are in need of a temporary home while their current sanctuary undergoes charitable renovation.

Homes of Hope CEO Hilary Price is urgently appealing to the Tauranga community to host the children, aged one to eight, and two adults from July 16-30.

'We're looking for someone who can provide a roof over their heads basically. It's a huge call, but we hope to keep them all together.”

Ideally, the home will be in the Tauranga vicinity as the children will attend school and daycare once the school term begins, says Hilary.

'Other than that, we just need somewhere with beds, a bath and somewhere they can cook meals.”

Two adults, the children's ‘house mum' and a support worker will stay with the children.

'They will take care of the children, so no further work is required by the host family.”

A house was offered earlier this week, but fell through yesterday.

All of the children have come to Homes of Hope from a rough family situation.

'These particular children have no concerns in terms of high needs or behavioural issues.”

The children's current safe house will undergo major renovations beginning July 12. More than 34 labourers and suppliers from Waihi to Te Puke are supplying materials free of charge and volunteers from Mount Mosaic Church will provide free labour.

'Mount Mosaic is leading the charge. They're pushing out one end of the house to make it bigger and provide an ensuite for the house parents.

'That will give us the capacity to house more children too.”

It's the first time a Homes of Hope home is undergoing renovations in the charity's 11 years of operation in the Bay, says Hilary.

'We are just completely and utterly amazed at the support we're being given. It just shows the wonderful good will in our community.”

Homes of Hope is a charitable organisation providing foster care to abused and/or neglected children.

Children are placed in safe homes, where they receive treatment emotionally and remain until they find a safe permanent home.

A Few Questions

Posted on 11-07-2014 21:01 | By The Sage

How much funding has the Homes of Hope received from donations? Who is accountable for this funding? How many children have they helped? If this charitable organisation were to stop what it is doing, who would the houses belong to? Are auditd accounts available for public viewing?
