Student makes Miss Universe NZ

A young Papamoa woman will today celebrate her birthday by shopping for new shoes and clothes after being named a finalist in the Miss Universe New Zealand pageant.

Zeta Fraser, who is turning 20 today, was named as one of the wild card finalists on Sunday after missing out of the top 23 in June.

'I was really quite amazed because I didn't get through the top 23 and then they announced four wild cards and I was one of them.

'I found out on Sunday. I had missed a call and heard the message and I kind of knew then.”

Zeta entered the competition in March and attended a stiletto camp in May.

'That was a two day get together in Auckland where we participated in workshops.

'Then in June they announced the top 23 and now to wait until July to find out I made it, was really amazing.”

As part of the pageant, Zeta will fundraise for a charity through a dedicated Facebook page.

'We are fundraising for the children's charity Varity and 50 per cent of the money will also go towards the Miss Universe journey.”

Entering the Miss Universe New Zealand pageant is something Zeta has also wanted to do.

'Then I saw a girl I knew enter it [Miss Universe New Zealand] last year and I followed the journey they all went on.” What attracted Zeta to the competition is the experience she expects to get from the journey.

'Also for me it's about becoming more of a public figure. I do think I want to be a role model for other people and I want to be the kind of person to make changes and have a positive impact.”

Zeta doesn't get a lot of spare time, when she's not busy preparing for Miss Universe New Zealand, she studies full time for her management degree and works full time at Zone Cafe and Bar.

The grand final and winner will be announced on September 18.
