Thames-Coromandel District Council is asking the region's residents to restrict their driving tonight around the east coast and prepare for possible power cuts, with easterly winds already arriving on the peninsula.

TCDC says it expects the windy weather event to last during five or six high tides and resident should make sure they're ready for the impact of high winds.

Coromandel Peninsula residents should prepare for easterly winds, which are set to make driving conditions hazardous tongiht and cause possible power cuts.

'What does this mean for us? More than anything, it means you need to be very careful when driving.

'If you don't need to drive around on the east coast after dinner tonight, don't. Play safe and enjoy a night in.

'Make sure you're ready for any possible power cuts due to debris hitting power lines.”

TCDC says wind is likely to batter the east coast the most and in some places push the water past spring tide levels.

'The west coast is not expected to have the same degree of wind-caused water levels, but may get close.

'Waves are likely to remain higher than normal right through until Friday, and at high tides, that typically means some of the low lying coastal areas will get surface flooding.

TCDC says because it's not a storm, the oncoming weather is being called 'a sustained easterly wind event”.

'Technically, the storm is away from the country, but the low pressure is causing the wind –and that's the bit we're going to feel more than anything.”

Due to wind predicted, TCDC has taken down the dome above the Thames Centennial Pool.

'The pool is very exposed on our eastern side, which is the worst wind direction possible for us. We will be closed for all use until further notice and will keep everyone informed as soon as we look at inflating the dome again.”
