Gale force wind warning

Heavy rain and severe easterly gales gusting up to 120 km/h are expected to hammer the Coromandel and parts of the Kaimai Ranges from midday today.

MetService is issuing a severe weather warning for the Coromandel and parts of Northland with high winds expected, from a low approaching the north today.

The weather forecaster warns winds have the potential to damage trees, powerlines, unsecure structures and make driving conditions hazardous.

'Rivers and streams are likely to rise rapidly with surface flooding and slips possible,” adds MetService Forecaster Andy Downs.

He says about 120 to 160mm of rain is expected to spread into parts of Coromandel Peninsula.

While rainfall amounts reaching warning criteria is looking less likely, 'a watch will be maintained for the time being”.

The severity of the gales and rain will approach the regions today and are expected to gradually weaken from Wednesday afternoon.

A severe weather watch is also in place for the Kaimai Ranges and parts of eastern through until Wednesday evening.

The forecast is for drizzle today turning to rain tomorrow with strengthening easterlies.
