School’s woollen Shrek stolen

Teachers at Gate Pa Preschool are reluctant to display further yarn bombing creations after their centre-piece was stolen a second time from just outside the gate.

Children, parents and teachers have dressed the entrance to the preschool at 1132 Cameron Road with brightly coloured wool as part of the 2014 yarn bomb project.

But teacher Caroline Hjorth arrived to work on Monday to find the ‘giant' from their nursery rhyme-themed woollen masterpiece gone.

'We have Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Bo Peep and Goldilocks and Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood and a few other things,” says Caroline.

'Luckily Humpty Dumpty had fallen off his wall and I'd brought him in in the weekend, so he's safe.

'He was knitted for us by a parent as well. But I'm a little bit reluctant to put Humpty back out again.”

Three fairies made by pre-schooler Wesley Barnes' mother have also been taken from the display.

'They [the children] are all disappointed,” says Caroline. 'Especially the boy who's mums' fairies got taken.

This is the second time the centrepiece has been taken, says Caroline, who noticed the first ‘giant' was missing last Monday morning.

She put a Shrek soft toy up on Thursday morning to replace it, but by this morning it was gone. The centrepiece sits on top of the tree and is tied there with string.

Caroline says it took about five teachers and as many as four parents to create the piece.

'When we decided to do the yarn bombing, we invited parents to join in and help us and we had student teachers, children and the yarn bombers from Greerton came in as well.

'Some of them have never knitted before.”

Caroline hasn't contacted police about the matter, but she is hoping those who took Shrek and the fairies will bring them back soon.

'It's probably some children who have taken them off home thinking they're wonderful, but it would be really nice if they pop them back – even if they just pop them on the deck.”
