Flyover for Bayfair roundabout

Details of a planned $100 million flyover at the Bayfair roundabout will be released in the next 10 days.

NZTA confirmed a flyover is the best option to ease congestion at the Maunganui and Girven Road roundabout.

In the last 12 months NZTA tabled a number of options for the ‘SH2 Maunganui Girven intersection improvements' project, including re-routing the adjacent railway line behind Owens Place, constructing elevated flyovers at the Maunganui Road and Te Maunga roundabouts and extending Owens Place to Truman Lane.

The railway re-routing, seen in three of the four options, could mean a shift from between Maunganui Road and Omanu Golf Course, causing possible impact on the 12th and 13th holes.

But SunLive understands the proposed flyover concept will differ slightly from the three tabled options presented to the community at an open day at Baypark last April.

NZTA highway manager Brett Gliddon has ruled out a further option of installing traffic lights, at a cost of up to $40m, as it does not provide long-term improvements to congestion and safety required.

'NZ Transport Agency has been investigating a number of options to increase safety and reduce congestion and travel time at the Maunganui Road and Girven Road intersection,” says Brett.

'The proposals put on the table highlighted different flyover options, with some involving relocating the railway,” says Brett.

Brett says the project has been widely supported, with the public viewing congestion at the Maunganui-Girven roundabout as a major concern that requires a long term safety solution.

Each option has been assessed for traffic flow effect, safety and design and environmental constraints.

The project, currently the number one 2014 project for national funding, looks to maximise the efficiency of the Tauranga Eastern Link in the near future.

NZTA says at peak times the Maunganui Girven intersection creates a 'choke point” causing delays on SH2. It also impacts the traffic flow at Te Maunga roundabout.

NZTA believe congestion will only get worse with forecasted traffic volumes expected to grow from 36,000 to nearly 60,000 in 20 years.

Between 2007 and 2012 there were 29 crashes - three resulted in fatalities and five with serious injuries in the area.

"installing traffic lights, at a cost of up to $40m, as it does not provide long-term improvements to congestion and safety required." what a very well posted statement But i still think NZTA have their head in the sand

What a good idea. this roundabout is a regular pain in the butt. Good that the police /traffic division has started collecting funding for the project already.

The decision has been a very long time coming.A lot of worry to residents in the close vicinity. There were 3 or 4 options, some more obvious than others as to suitability.I fail to see why this has taken so long.Maybe the flyovers for Te Maunga and Girven road should have been constructed before the Eastern route?

Is on Maunganui Road, that is the wrong way, be better to put it the other way and put it over the railway the other way would stop the issue of the trains stopping the traffic also. Free left turns would help, cost about $25m. The other $75m can be used to buy Route K, much better deal then.
