Kindergarten to be named Wairakei

The new kindergarten to be built in Papamoa will be named Wairakei.

The decision was made following consultation with Nga Potiki.

The new kindergarten is to be built on the corner of Wairakei Ave and Golden Sands Drive, Papamoa, with construction due to begin in September.

'The name reflects the importance of the Wairakei Stream as a significant cultural and environmental feature of our local area,” says establishment committee convenor Natasha Brokenshire.

'Wairakei is also the name by which the original community to the south of the Wairakei Reserve is known.”

Final details of the building plan are currently being worked on and documentation will be submitted to council in the coming weeks.

'The area has seen rapid population growth, particularly of families with young children, and surveys in the area have shown a significant demand for kindergarten,” Natasha said when the new kindergarten was announced in April.

'The site [in Papamoa] was chosen because of its close proximity to the school as it is intended to develop a close relationship with them to ensure smooth transitions for children.”
