Targa skids into peninsula

The Targa Rally will once again roar into the Coromandel as drivers prepare for an action packed event this weekend.

The Thames Coromandel District Council warns a number of roads will be closed around the region for the rally.

Cars of all shapes and sizes will be making their way to the Coromandel Peninsula for the Targa Rally this weekend.

Maratoto Road from the intersection with State Highway 26 (Paeroa-Kopu Road) to the intersection with Old Maratoto Road will be closed between 12.45pm and 4.15pm on Friday.

Crews will be having a 20 minute service break in Thames, on the section of Pollen Street between Pahau and Cochrane Streets, which will be closed, before heading over the hill to Whitianga, says a council spokespeson.

The following roads will also be closed:

State Highway 25 from east of the intersection with Tiki Road to the Castle Rock Winery between 2.30pm and 5.30pm on Friday.

State Highway 25 starting at house number 1032 to the intersection with Ocean Beach Road, just north of Tairua, will be closed between 6.45am and 10am on Saturday.

'The Rally will be utilising the Mercury Bay Sports Park car park area and toilets. The first of the service crews will arrive around 3pm,” says a statement from the council.

'The Tour cars arrive about 3.45pm followed by competitor cars about 4.20pm for a service, then onto Lee Street car park for the overnight park up.”

The cars will be leaving the sports park about 7pm.
