International therapy at RDA

Following a successful training session last year, the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association has returned to the Tauranga Riding for Disabled.

Tauranga Occupational Therapist Gail Morley is this week hosting the event which is being attended by participants from New Zealand and Australia.

An Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association seminar is being held at Tauranga RDA in Welcome Bay.

This year Brenda Hunter from Wisconsin, USA and Sharon Boyce from Johannesburg, South Africa are facilitating the training.

Gail says the EAGALA model is an experiential based therapy which is gaining momentum worldwide with clients who don't necessarily respond to traditional office based therapy methods.

'This gives the clients the opportunity to explore their issues in an arena with the horses which is proving to be really successful in allowing them to come to their own conclusions and solutions.”

The American developed therapy uses horses for emotional growth and learning.

Gail says participants learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses and then processing thoughts, beliefs, behaviors and patterns.

Each session is facilitated by a mental health professional and equine specialist.

Gail says clients who have benefited from this treatment include those with anxiety, depression, grief, behavioral issues, eating disorders and social/personal interaction difficulties.

EAGALA trainer Brenda Hunter says the Tauranga RDA Centre is optimal for an EAGALA training venue.

'It has fantastic views. The facility is well set up and can accommodate a large number of people. The horses are healthy and well cared for with good temperaments and a variety of personalities which lend themselves well to this therapy.

'This is my third time visiting New Zealand and New Zealanders are so welcoming and genuine. I really enjoy the way they have such pride in their country and love to share information about their culture.”
